Recovery & Aftercare

Your massage is finished and you're feeling relaxed. What happens now?

Right, I'm done. Do I need to do anything afterwards?

Nothing complicated.

One of the simplest things you can do is have some water. There's a complimentary bottle of cold water waiting for you at ManSpa, and it's worth continuing to drink normally through the rest of the day, particularly if you've come in after work, exercise or a generally busy day.

You don't need to force litres of water down yourself or "flush out toxins". Just make sure you're comfortably hydrated.

Am I likely to feel tired?

You might.

Some people leave feeling refreshed and energised. Others feel incredibly relaxed and ready for a quiet evening.

A lot of my clients tell me they sleep much more deeply on the night after their massage.

So here's one particularly practical piece of ManSpa aftercare advice:

If you need to be up at a particular time tomorrow morning, set your alarm.

It sounds obvious. You'll understand why it's in this Guide when you wake up wondering why the room is suspiciously bright.

Can I exercise afterwards?

That depends on the massage you've had and what you were planning to do.

After a relaxation-led massage, normal everyday activity is generally fine if you feel comfortable.

If we've done more focused or deeper work, particularly through muscles you've been training heavily, heading straight out for an intense workout may not be the best use of the recovery time you've just given yourself.

Listen to how your body feels. If something feels tender or fatigued, give it a chance to settle rather than immediately putting it under another heavy load.

If you're having massage specifically around an event, competition or training programme, we'll talk about timing as part of your treatment.

What about alcohol afterwards?

There's no need for an elaborate post-massage regime, but remember how relaxed you may feel afterwards.

Water is the better first choice, particularly if you've exercised, been physically active or haven't drunk much during the day.

If you're planning to drink alcohol later, be sensible about it and make sure you're properly hydrated too.

Can I shower after my massage?

Yes.

There's a private shower available at ManSpa after your treatment, with fresh towels provided.

Whether you use it is entirely up to you. Some clients prefer to shower immediately, while others are perfectly happy getting dressed and heading home.

If there's a particular reason I'd recommend leaving something on the skin or doing anything differently following your treatment, I'll tell you.

Is it normal to feel a bit tender afterwards?

It can be, particularly if we've spent time working more deeply on an area that was already tight or sensitive.

You may notice some temporary tenderness, stiffness or simply greater awareness of an area that received more focused work.

That doesn't mean a massage needs to hurt afterwards to have been effective. Plenty of treatments leave people feeling relaxed and comfortable with little or no tenderness at all.

Everybody responds differently.

How long should that tenderness last?

Minor post-massage tenderness should settle rather than progressively get worse.

How quickly that happens varies according to the individual, the treatment and how much focused work we've done.

Gentle movement, normal hydration and allowing the area some recovery time may be all you need.

If you're concerned about how you're feeling after your treatment, get in touch rather than sitting at home wondering whether it's normal.

Is there anything that isn't normal?

Massage shouldn't become the automatic explanation for every symptom that happens afterwards.

Significant or increasing pain, marked swelling, unusual weakness or numbness, feeling seriously unwell, or symptoms that concern you shouldn't simply be dismissed as "it's probably because I had a massage."

If something feels wrong or you're worried about a symptom, seek appropriate medical advice.

And if you're unsure whether something could reasonably be related to your treatment, you're welcome to let me know what you're experiencing.

When should I have another massage?

There isn't a universal timetable.

Some clients come for a massage occasionally when they feel they need one. Others find regular sessions useful as part of looking after themselves, particularly when work, training or everyday life repeatedly puts the same demands on their body.

We'll never invent a schedule simply to get another appointment into the diary.

How often you choose to have a massage should depend on you, what you're trying to achieve, how your body responds and what fits realistically into your life.

And that brings us to the end of your first journey through ManSpa.

You've worked out which massage might suit you, you know what happens during your first session, and now you know what to expect afterwards.

From here, The ManSpa Study becomes somewhere you can dip into whenever you want to understand a little more, whether that's the benefits of regular massage, muscular tension, training and recovery, different massage techniques, relaxation, or simply why your shoulders seem determined to live somewhere around your ears.

No homework. No exam. Just useful information when you want it.
